Vinyl Silanes

Vinyl silanes are compounds carrying a vinyl functional group and a reactive alkoxy group. This structure makes vinyl silanes to act as crosslinkers and form tight Si-O-Si linkages. Vinyl functionality enables vinyl silanes to crosslink to organic polymers. Different alkoxy groups allows vinyl silanes to bond to inorganic materials and enhance wettability and adhesion.

Wires, Cables & Pipes - Main Markets of Vinyl Silanes

Combined with their superior functionalities, Co-Formula vinyl silanes are used in a wide range of industries and markets. The largest consumption volume of Co-Formula vinyl silanes comes from wires, cables and pipes. Vinyl silanes can be grafted to unsaturated polymers, like polyethylene and polyester. Cross-linked polyethylene compounds which are used in XLPE cables and PEX-b pipes are the main application fields.

In wires, cables and pipes fields, most of end-users utilize CFS-027, Vinyltrimethoxysilane (VTMO) and CFS-080, Vinyltriethoxysilane (VTEO) as silane grating agents and silane crosslinking agents. Concerned vinyl silanes can be grafted to polyethylene and polyester resins. Once grafted, the resins can be crosslinked under moisture cure conditions.

These vinyl silanes have the capability to enhance mechanical properties and electrical properties. For example, they can improve high temperature resistance and weatherability, promote tensile rate and tear strength, get higher oxygen index and improve the durability of organic resins. For Low Smoke Halogen Free Flame Retardant wires and cables, CFS-534, Vinyltris(2-methoxyethoxy)silane (VTMOEO) is normally chosen to improve dispersion of flame-retardant powders or fillers.

Other Functions & Applications of Vinyl Silanes

In addition to above silane crosslinked polyethylene application, Co-Formula vinyl silanes can also be used in a variety of sealants and coatings. As adhesion promoters, Co-Formula vinyl silanes can enhance the adhesion to a wide series of inorganic substrates. As moisture scavengers for MS polymers processing, Co-Formula vinyl silanes with a reactive methoxy group can be applied in moisture sensitive systems.
