1. Dimethyl silicone oil is widely used as an electrical insulation medium in the electromechanical industry

Although the electrical characteristics of simethicone oil are not stronger than that of ordinary insulating oil, it has a wide viscosity range, good thermal stability, oxidation resistance, small dielectric loss, low freezing point and vapor pressure, high flash point and ignition point, and can be used in a wide range of temperatures and frequencies, and also can maintain good dielectric properties within the range.

And it has good compatibility with other insulating materials, so it is widely used as insulation, cooling, impregnation, lubrication, damping, coating and heat carrier of various transformers, capacitors, electronic equipment, components and devices, cable connection parts, etc.

Among the commonly used transformer oils, mineral oil is used the most. Its advantages are good dielectric properties and low cost, but its Achilles heel is that it is easy to burn and is very unsafe. For example, although polychlorinated biphenyls are excellent in fire resistance, they are highly carcinogenic and have been banned in major countries; although fluorine and chlorine compounds have good fire resistance, their boiling point is too low, and poor sealing will cause environmental pollution.

2. The development of dimethyl silicone oil as a cooling and insulating medium

In contrast, simethicone has many advantages. Therefore, transformers using simethicone oil as cooling and insulating medium have developed rapidly with the development of society.

Since silicone oil was first used in transformers in 1972, none of the faults came from silicone oil. On the contrary, during this period, the damage rate of non-silicon oil transformers is as high as 0.2%~0.4%.

At present, the United States, Japan, Western Europe and even some countries in the Middle East have used silicone oil transformers in high-rise buildings, residential areas, schools, factories and key departments with special requirements.

In the 1980s, China also developed silicone oil for transformers, and transformers made of it have been operating safely in Beijing subways and other departments for many years.

Although, the price of silicone oil is higher than that of mineral oil. However, with the compact design of transformers, the amount of silicone oil loaded can be greatly reduced, thereby greatly reducing the production of silicone oil transformers. Now more and more people use dimethyl silicone oil instead of mineral oil as electrical insulating oil.
