General adhesives or resin with the use of coupling agent can not only improve the bonding strength, but also increase the water resistance and durability of the adhesive force. For example, although polyurethane and epoxy resin have high adhesion to many materials, their adhesion durability and water resistance are not ideal. The properties of silane coupling agents can be improved significantly. The specific applications of silane coupling agents in the adhesive industry are as follows:


  1. In the structure of the adhesive metal and non-metal bonding, if use silane tackifier, it can be condensed with metal oxide, or with another silanol condensation, so that the silicon atoms and the surface of the adhesive in close contact. If silane is added to butadiene-phenolic structural adhesive, the bonding strength can be improved significantly.


  2. Silane coupling agents has been widely used as a treatment agent for adhesive glass fiber. It can react with the interface to improve the bonding strength. For example, the peel strength of neoprene adhesive is 1.07 kg /cm2 when silane is not used as the treating agent. And it will be 8.7 kg /cm2 when aminosilane is used as the treating agent.


  3. In the rubber and other materials of the adhesive, silane viscosifier has a special function. It obviously improves the bonding strength of various rubber and other materials. For example, when glass is bonded with polyurethane rubber, if silane is not used as treating agent, the peel strength of the rubber is 0.224 kg /cm2, and it will be  7.26 kg /cm2 if silane is added.


  4. Originally problems that can not be solved by the general adhesive bonding, can be solved by the silane coupling agent. According to the theory of chemical bond, and choose the appropriate silane coupling agent,  aluminum and polyethylene, silicone rubber and metal, silicone rubber and plexiglass can achieve  a satisfactory result. For example, vinyl triperoxide tert-butyl silane (Y-4310) can be used to bond polyethylene to aluminum foil. By using butadienyl triethoxysilane, the tensile strength of silicone rubber and metal can reach 21.6 ~ 22.4 kg/cm2.
