The coupling agent is an organosilicon compound with a special structure. In its molecule, it has both reactive groups that can be combined with inorganic materials (such as glass, cement, metal) and reactive groups that can be combined with organic materials (such as synthetic resins). Commonly used theories include chemical bond theory, surface infiltration theory, deformation layer theory, constrained layer theory, etc. The silane coupling agent is used as a surface modifier to improve the dispersion and adhesion of plastics filled with inorganic fillers.

1. Application of silane coupling agent

Silane coupling agent was developed as a glass fiber treatment agent for glass fiber reinforced plastics very early. Since the silane coupling agent improves the bonding between the glass fiber and the resin, the mechanical properties of the reinforced plastic are significantly improved.

With the rapid development of composite materials, the development speed of silane coupling agents is also very fast in terms of variety and output. In recent years, the use of silane coupling agents to introduce specific functional groups into certain materials can improve the surface properties of materials, obtain antistatic, anti-mildew, deodorant, anti-coagulation and physiological inertness, etc., which has become the beginning of a new application of silane coupling agent.

Due to the development of many important application fields, silane coupling agents have become an important branch of silicone.

This characteristic of silane coupling agent was first used in glass fiber reinforced plastics (FRP) as a surface treatment agent for glass fibers, which greatly improved the mechanical properties, electrical properties and anti-aging properties of FRP. The importance of it has long been recognized.

2. The principle of the silane coupling agent as a tackifier is that it has two groups:

One kind of group can be combined with the skeleton material to be bonded; while the other kind of group can be combined with polymer materials or adhesives, thus forming higher chemical bonds at the bonding interface and greatly improving the bonding strength.

There are generally three methods for the application of silane coupling agents:

One is as a surface treatment agent for skeleton materials;

The second is to add it to the adhesive;

The third is directly added to the polymer material.

From the perspective of giving full play to its effectiveness and reducing costs, the first two methods are better.
